Memorandum of Cooperation of ILSP/ATHENA RC with the German Archaeological Institute of Athens

The Institute for Language and Speech Processing of the Athena Research Center and the German Archaeological Institute of Athens (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut – DAI), have concluded a Memorandum of Cooperation, sealing their common commitment to scientific and technological progress in the field of archaeology.

This collaboration seeks to maximize the expertise of both organizations by developing and carrying out joint research projects while advancing digital technology across all aspects of archaeological practice. Their shared goal is to showcase cultural heritage and enhance scientific knowledge through the use of innovative technologies.

Key Areas of Collaboration:

  • Applying cutting-edge technologies for the digitization, documentation, and presentation of archaeological data, following FAIR and OPEN principles.
  • Supporting young researchers in computational and digital archaeology.
  • Expanding outreach efforts to share archaeological research findings with the broader public.
  • Enhancing collaboration through joint publications and co-organized events to promote archaeological knowledge.

Signing Ceremony

The official signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation took place on January 28, 2025, at the Library of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens. The event was honored by the presence and remarks of key representatives from both organizations, including Katja Sporn, Director of DAI Athens; Ioannis Emiris, General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ATHENA Research Center; Oliver Pilz, Deputy Director of DAI Athens; Vasilis Katsouros, Director of the Institute for Speech Processing; and Despina Tsiafaki, Director of Research at the ATHENA Research Center.

Conversing with the public: A workshop on the ECHOES project at the Multiplex of Art and Thought in Xanthi

The workshop “Echoes: Reconstructing the life of traditional settlements through interactive experiences and 3D sound”, held on November 6, 2024 in the hospitable Multiplex of Art and Thought of Xanthi, offered an enchanting journey through time and local history. The audience, including city residents and select invited representatives of the local government, came in contact with a special experience that connected modern technologies with the authentic sound and pulse of everyday life of an old, multicultural Xanthi.

The Karabournaki excavation at the “Former Kodra military camp: past, present, future”

On Saturday, October 5, the Association of Katirliotes of Kalamaria organized the event “Former Kodra military camp: past, present, future”. The event was attended by Eleni Manakidou, Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Athens. and Despoina Tsiafaki, Doctor of Classical Archeology and Research Director of the Athena Research Center, who participated with a lecture entitled: “The ancient settlement at Karabournaki: revealing the past through three decades of archaeological research by the AUTH”
